Planning; Organising; Directing; Controlling
During the Planning module team leaders and
managers review the necessary skills required to set
measurable objectives, how to identify required
resources, and how to analyse these in terms of
available resources. They learn how to consider
alternatives, assign responsibility, establish checkpoints, provide for contingencies and document
the plan. PERT charts, Gantt charts, Flow charts,
Master Control lists and other planning tools enable
team leaders and managers to implement, document
and monitor the plans efficiently.
After the Organising module, team leaders and managers
will be able to identify organisational inefficiencies and
overcome these by applying the following organising
principles: grouping, integration, division of labour, span
of control and accountability.
During the Organising workshop, team leaders review
the skills required to analyse and coordinate the
workload realistically, in order to match existing team
member’s skills and knowledge with the job
requirements. This will facilitate effective staffing or
recruiting if necessary. By organising properly, team
leaders and teams become more efficient, and thus
more productive – able to meet the challenge of
achieving optimal results.
Directing is the third module in the functional Management Solution, and is the logical follow-up to Planning and Organising. During the Directing module, team leaders and managers learn to provide
guidance, coordination and support for people, in order
to enable them to carry out their duties to the required
standard. Leadership, communication and motivation
are addressed and the importance of the team leader /
manager's role in maintaining and enhancing morale,
effectiveness and productivity is highlighted.
“If you're not controlling and measuring - you're notmanaging!”
In the Controlling module learners apply monitoring
and progress management techniques to ensure that
work meets the established performance standards. It
enables team leaders and managers to provide
constructive feedback to team members, and also
enables them to take corrective action if they are alerted
to deviations in quality or quantity of outputs.
