HIV / AIDS Knowledge is Power is based on the concept of
'Person in Environment' and focuses on educating people to
promote wellness and the prevention of AIDS. It is relevant for
all South Africans as it focuses on understanding the impact of
HIV and AIDS on the individual; on the individual in the family
context; and on the individual within a wider community and
society. As the HIV / AIDS pandemic affects us in the workplace
and in all aspects of our personal lives, it is vital that all South
Africans are empowered to make positive choices about their
lifestyles and to help others to do the same.
This essential life-skills programme gives learners the
knowledge and insight that they need, as it provides the basis
for sound understanding of practical aspects of HIV and AIDS in
South Africa.

- Understanding what HIV/AIDS is
- Myths and Truths About HIV/AIDS and
- HIV Transmission
- Reducing Risk
- Rights and Responsibilities
- Living with HIV/AIDS
HIV / AIDS Knowledge is Power is a dynamic, experiential
learning process. The methodology used is practical and
learners are encouraged to address any questions or concerns
that they have.
Learners complete Pre and Post-tests and work through a
detailed manual including readings, activities and selfevaluation
questionnaires. Frequently Asked Questions are
discussed and answered and Personal Action Planning is
incorporated in the process to ensure that learners are able to
apply the insight and understanding gained.

Learners will be able to:
- Understand the prevalence and impact of HIV / AIDS in
SA
- Define and understand the difference between HIV & AIDS
- Understand how a healthy immune system functions and
how it is affected by HIV
- Understand the myths and truth about HIV / AIDS
- Understand and be able to explain how HIV is transmitted
- Understand the importance of HIV Testing in
understanding and managing risk
- Assess risk status by comparing safe and high-risk
behaviours
- Take action to implement or maintain safe behaviour
- Understand the rights and responsibilities of people living
with HIV / AIDS
- Understand what decisions need to be considered when
living with HIV and AIDS
- Understand and promote healthy living

Post-workshop requirements:
Knowledge questionnaire and skill application assignment
Materials for training and education:
Learners will receive a detailed manual including readings,
activities, self-evaluation questionnaires, Frequently Asked
Questions and Personal Action Plans.
Pre and Post-tests are conducted. Contact information sheets,
posters, condoms and HIV/AIDS educational materials will also
be available
