Workwise: Building Commitment Through Communication | Communication!

Building Commitment Through Communication

The objective of Building Commitment Through Communication is overcoming ineffective and unproductive communication habits, and developing more effective techniques.

In today's work environment, communicating effectively is more challenging than ever! More responsibility is being handled at lower levels in organisations. These responsibilities require skilled communications. In addition, organisations today are experiencing incredible diversity within their workforce, increasing the need to develop and enhance the communication skills of all staff members.

Building Commitment Through Communication is based on the belief that all successful communication is a result of a fundamental respect for others. This respect is demonstrated when communicators:

  • Appreciate not just tolerate differences between people, eg: age, ethnic heritage, gender, nationality, religion, political affiliation, physical abilities or qualities, race, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status
  • Plan and deliver messages with the other person's needs and wants in mind
  • Listen with the goal of truly understanding what the other person is telling them

Learners learn to use communication skills to build commitment among the people they work with subordinates, colleagues and superiors. They learn to recognise and overcome barriers to understanding by designing and sending clear, concise messages; requesting and giving feedback; listening to understand messages, and using appropriate body language and non-verbal clues – always with the needs and perspectives of others as the guiding principle.

Building Commitment Through Communication focuses on building commitment with others by creating and maintaining a work climate in which people actively work together and support each other in accomplishing tasks and reaching goals.
