“After all, when you come right down to it, how
many people speak the same language even when
they speak the same language?”
Russel Hoban
Effective communication is a vital part of our lives in
and out of the office. We communicate to inform,
persuade and remind. Yet many people fail to
communicate effectively, thus inadvertently crippling
productivity.
Achieving Communication Effectiveness (ACE) is a
workshop designed to enhance and improve on-the-job
communication skills. It focuses on the behaviours that
hinder effective communication and provides the
techniques needed to achieve communication
credibility.
ACE paves the way to trust, self-respect and respect for
others, the effect of which is positive and professional
interpersonal communications. Participation in ACE
fosters co-operation and provides learners with skills
that enable them to deal with conflict situations proactively,
by developing listening skills, identifying
communication behaviour styles and applying a step by
step method of constructively handling conflict with
confidence, composure and flexibility.
The skills learnt during ACE are transferable to every
situation; i.e. they are used when communicating with
team leaders, managers and colleagues, as well as
support workers.
The major topics addressed are:
- Understanding basic communication styles and
behaviours, including the role of body language
- Listening effectively
- Overcoming barriers to effective communication
- Handling negative feedback and conflict
- Understanding the components of a good message
- Creating situation-specific responses
- Communicating non-manipulatively
- Dealing with anger
